Between Penty and Sheikh, it’s the latter who gets the better-written role, and Sheikh is extremely competent. His track involves him falling for the carefree Happy, even though he’s set to marry childhood pal Zoya (Momal Sheikh). He’s shown he can stand his ground even in smaller roles in the past, be it in Rai’s ‘Raanjhanna’ or Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, and it’s a joy to see him taking on a full-fledged part here.

Kanwaljit Singh, a popular face on TV in the 1990s, makes a comeback of sorts with two roles in as many weeks (he played a corrupt government official in last week’s ‘Rustom’), and gets at least a couple moments to shine as Happy’s hapless parent.Ībhay Deol is the star of this enterprise, getting the meatiest part and doing it full justice. Hopefully, Sheirgill won’t fall into a rut.įazal displays an impish charm that seems to come naturally, but where he really surprises is with his comic timing. He’s terrific, though, displaying the kind of comic timing Akshay Kumar excelled at in a spate of comedies, before his characters too began resembling those he played in other films. What keeps ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’ afloat is the ensemble, with Sheirgill yet again playing the larger-than-life, roguish Punjabi who commands respect from everyone else in frame, but can’t win over the girl (as in the ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ series, directed by this film’s producer, Anand L Rai). But he seems to show little faith in his own script as director, opting for over-the-top staging and music to bring attention to punch lines. Aziz shows restraint in his writing, never crossing the fine line between double entendre and “double meaning”, banking more on character quirks and well-timed gags. I waited to find out who the film’s writer was in the end credits - by then annoyed by Aziz’s penchant to destroy several good moments with unnecessarily loud background music - only to be surprised to find the filmmaker himself to have scripted ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’. Such puerile humour works mainly due to the sincerity of the actors, and the fact that the situations are truly comic. At one point, Afridi explains how music is “mausiki” in Urdu, which the Jat, Bagga, mistakes as an insult to his mausi (aunt). There’s plenty of word play in this sequence, given that the Pakistanis converse in chaste Urdu, puzzling the rest. Accompanying Bilal is Afridi (Piyush Mishra), a Pakistani police officer (Mishra basically plays Deepak Dobriyal in the film - hamming and hawing through his scenes, delivering some chuckles, but mostly grating on nerves).

Bilal’s come down from Lahore - where Happy accidentally landed up after her escape - and is in Amritsar to free Guddu from Bagga’s clutches. However, there are at least a dozen Laugh-Out-Loud moments here, like when Happy’s three suitors, Bilal, Guddu and Bagga (Jimmy Sheirgill) come across each other for the first time.īagga has kept Guddu hostage after Happy ran away on the night she was to wed Bagga. There was scope for the film to become a comedy of epic proportions, given how impoverished our cinema is in that department, but it never aims to rise above its ability to cause guffaws. Such moments are scarce in ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’, a film that relies on fast-paced storytelling and humorous one-liners, without ever trying to delve deep into the characters’ emotional state or aiming to make a larger point through the story. What makes the scene truly excellent is that the lines are being said to Guddu (Ali Fazal), a man equally in love with Happy, and who stands the best chance of walking away with the girl. In one of the film’s best-written scenes, for example, Pakistani diplomat Bilal (Abhay Deol) likens Happy (Penty) to the great Madhubala - a woman who several men fell in love with, but who could only reciprocate the feelings of a few. The men, meanwhile, get to bounce off each other, resulting in quite a few rib-tickling moments. Penty, surprisingly then, gets the shortest screen time among the principal cast - interacting with the male leads in brief spells, and then disappearing. Plus, she gets to be at the centre of the film’s plot, which involves three men falling in love with her character.

For an actor making a comeback after a considerable time spent away from the limelight - as Diana Penty does with Mudassar Aziz’s ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’ - there can be nothing better than a titular role.
